Walcot Hall, Lydbury North, Shropshire, SY7 8AZ

Open Gardens - Sunday 30th and Monday 31st May 2010

As part of the National Garden Scheme with money being donated to charity, Walcot Hall Gardens will be open to the public.

Wonderfully situated and with exceptional views of the Long Mynd, the grounds include colourful and varied borders and tremendous displays of rhododendrons and azaleas. In addition, the arboretum stands above the impressive array of stable yard, Twin Clock Towers, Ice House, meat safe and other outbuildings of classic 18th century Estate and is in turn overlooked by the Great British hill fort of Bury Ditches.

The romantically decayed walled garden is being restored and new plantings include wild flowers and several additional borders.

The arboretum was first planted in 1800 and contains a large collection of specimen trees including what was once thought to be the largest Douglas Fir in the country.

The woodland walks include two fishing pools and other surprises, to be discovered during the perambulation. A significant and substantial grotto and fountain with alpine plants being just one of them.

Delicious home-made cakes and tea will be served in the Ballroom. Plants, pottery and paintings will also be for sale.

The cost is £3.50 and an extra £2 if you want to view the house.
